NYC & Walk for Lupus Now

This trip had been planned for months; literally and the day had finally come. Friday, May 18th was finally here and I was so excited to be flying out to NYC.I had never been to New York before. I loved big cities and new this was going to be an exciting trip for me.

I had only got 3 hours of sleep the night before, so I was working on adrenaline only. I had to be up at 2:30 am in order to be at the airport by 4:30. I preferred early flights. That way I had the entire first day to do whatever I wanted to do.

My dear friend was meeting me at Laguardia Airport. Her flight was arriving at 7:30 am and my flight was to arrive at 9:10am. She too, was exhausted from having to get up early.

Our car service met us at the airport and was great! It took us to The Club Quarters Wall Street, where we were staying. The hotel was very nice and accommodating. Since we arrived so early, our check-in wasn't available.

We decided to tour the town, so to speak. Instead of getting a tourist map, we decided to walk freely; thinking we knew our bearings. We ended up finding our way down to South Street Seaport, where the Pier 17 and all of the shopping is located. http://www.southstreetseaport.com/ It was a phenomenal time. Other than the fact that I wore new shoes and had to purchase a new pair that were easier to wear in the walking conditions. I'm the type of person that would rather look good than be practical.

We also bought tickets to tour around on the Zephry/Circle Line Tours http://www.circlelinedowntown.com/ . We had the intention of touring the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. Being told that with the purchase of the boat ticket we'd have a free entrance to the island, we were thrilled.  It didn't quite happen that way. Apparently after 9/11, Ellis Island is cautious to tours, so it limits who can get off and tour. We were able to take pictures of Lady Liberty, but not get on the island.

We asked a crew member to take a picture of us and he was able to get a picture of the new One World Trade Center in the background.

After a fun filled day of activities, we didn't want the evening to end. We went back to our hotel and cleaned up. The night was still very young and the weather was gorgeous. We wanted to experience the good ethnic food we heard about. So, we asked where we should go for dinner. We were told Little Italy was the place to go. I'm so glad we went there! Little Italy is about 2-3 blocks long and its all ethnic Italian eateries and stores. These restaurants are small with apartments upstairs. Nothing like what you'd see in my home town; yet similar to downtown Chicago. I loved the feel and smell of the food. One young guy on the street begged for us to eat at his place; which was Umberto's http://www.flickr.com/photos/wallyg/331321262/ . This young guy told us that a mobster was shot and killed at this restaurant. His name was Crazy Joe Gallo. The food was spectacular! I thought I was going to be able to finish it, but I couldn't, yet I needed to try the Italian Style Cheesecake; which I couldn't finish either. It was so good! I totally recommend going there!

After dinner we walked to the end of Little Italy and shopped a little. By this point, we were tired and needed to hail a cab.

The following morning was the Lupus for Now Walk. Again, I was exhilarated and had a hard time sleeping. I was up at 6:00 am and raring to go. The walk started at 10:00 am, but we needed to be there at 9:00 am. two more admins met us at our hotel and we walked down to South Street Seaport; where the walk was being held at.

The walk was 3.1 miles and wrapped around the South Street Seaport Harbor around the Hudson. We did the walk in 1 1/2 hours. Which is pretty darn good considering we're pretty darn disabled. One of our admins has a pace maker, rest of the admins hips basically make us feel as if we're 90.

Here's the picture of our team

We're all very proud of our team and those that supported us! We couldn't have done it without all of you!

Saturday evening was our last night in town and we didn't want it to go to waste. Even though we walked further than we walked in years and knew we'd be paying for it all this week, we didn't want it to end.

The admins walked back to out hotel; which was about 1/2 mile away. We rested for a while then changed into our evening clothes.

Later that evening we headed down to Times Square. What a blast that was! I loved the exhilaration that came along with the feeling of the thousands of people that walked along the sidewalk.

There was so much to look at, so much to do. What was first, where to go, what to do? I was like a kid at Christmas, a kid in a candy store....Ah! Toy's R US! It's HUGE! But, I first see Elmo, in costume of course. I must get a picture....

Toy's R US is enormous! It has a Ferris wheel inside! I can't believe my eyes. Only in NYC; I guess???

M & M has it's own store too. That was cool. All these stores are packed with everyone and their brother. I think that's where this term was originated from; all the store in NYC!

We went into a few smaller stores, but nothing too mention. Then, I wanted to take a picture with the Naked Cowboy, but he wasn't anywhere to be seen. BUT...I think the Naked Cowgirl must be his grandmother, because she was there and she looks like she has been rode hard and may times over. I got a picture with her because who knows if she'll be there if and when I ever go back. This is not for children's eyes and may not be for many other adults eyes or the squeamish either.

Later that evening we ate at Times Square's Apple Bee's. I'm not a fan of Apple Bee's, but I have to say, this particular location was very good! I had Chicken Parmesan Alfredo with Broccoli and it was excellent. The company was very good too. We had a very good night.

Trying to find a cab to take us back to lower Manhattan wasn't as easy as it was to get us to Times Square, but none the less, we had a great time and memories we made.
